Pende Healing Mask

Painting – Artist Xea B. – Pende Healing Mask

In 1909, Pablo Picasso painted “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” regarded as the founding opus of Cubism. That painting was a shock, particularly because of the “deformed” faces of the characters. It is little known Picasso found his inspiration when discovering the Pende Mbangu masks. Apart from its scientifical aspects, not much has been said about the strengh and power of those amazing works of art.

As a tribute, this very strong painting has caught, in an impressive close-up, the essence of the mask: the deformed black/ white face and the eye, contain both distress and willpower. The frame in its roughness adds to the global intention of the homage.
